  • What is an electric vehicle?

Electric Vehicles - Electricity can be used as a transportation fuel to power battery electric vehicles (EVs). EVs store electricity in an energy storage device, such as a battery. The electricity powers the vehicle's wheels via an electric motor. EVs have limited energy storage capacity, which must be replenished by plugging into an electrical source.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles - Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) combine the benefits of pure electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. Like electric vehicles, they plug into the electric grid and can be powered by the stored electricity alone. Like hybrid electric vehicles, they have engines that enable greater driving range and battery recharging.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles - Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) typically combine the internal combustion engine of a conventional vehicle with the battery and electric motor of an electric vehicle. The combination offers low emissions, with the power, range, and convenient fueling of conventional (gasoline and diesel) vehicles—and HEVs never need to be plugged in.

2011 Chevy Volt - Electric Car

The Volt propulsion system is powered exclusively by electricity. The Chevy Volt is an electric vehicle that has a range extender in the form of a gasoline engine. This means the Chevy Volt runs on electricity from its battery. Plug the Volt into any electric outlet and let it charge overnight and it's ready to run on an electric charge for up to 40 miles. No gas or emissions during this 40 mile run. A survey from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics found that more than 75% of people commute 40 miles a day or less. So the Chevy Volt will make a great car for local trips to and from work. How long does it really take the Chevy Volt take to charge? In about ten hours, you'll have a fully charged Volt waiting for you, ready to go.

After the first 40 miles the Chevy Volt extends its range with a gas generator that produces enough energy to power it for hundreds of miles on a single tank of gas. The Chevy volt runs on electricity it creates from gas. An electric vehicle with range extending capabilities like Volt, however, uses less gasoline, rides much more quietly in electric mode and helps to reduce emissions. The Chevy volt is in the testing phase and should be available by the end of 2010.
